A great fit if…

  • You're a night owl
  • You want a small, low-cost first pet
  • You enjoy watching more than cuddling

Think twice if…

  • You want a pet that’s awake during the day
  • Saying goodbye after two or three years would be very hard

Care basics

  • A much bigger enclosure than most pet stores suggest, with deep bedding for burrowing
  • A solid wheel big enough that their back stays straight
  • Syrian hamsters must live alone
  • Chew toys and hiding places
  • Gentle, patient handling in the evening

Fun fact: Hamsters can pack their cheek pouches so full that their head nearly doubles in width.
