A great fit if…

  • You want a smart pet you can train

  • You can keep two or more

Think twice if…

  • Short lifespans would be hard on you
  • Someone at home is uneasy around rodents

Care basics

  • Keep same-sex pairs or groups
  • Daily supervised free-roam time
  • A varied diet of rat blocks plus fresh veg
  • A big cage with hammocks and climbing
  • A vet who treats small mammals

Fun fact: Pet rats can learn their names and tricks, and researchers have found they make ultrasonic “laughing” chirps when tickled.
